The vehicle that was at the auto show is a preview of the very vehicle that will be in showrooms this coming year.

Engine and Transmission

This rear-wheel drive model features a mid-mounted engine, an aerodynamic body, an EcoBoost V-6 engine and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. The Ford Mustang

Trailers of the East Coast/Flickr Creative Commons

Many like to know the history of the vehicle they are interested in and the Ford Mustang has plenty of history. The Mustang was originally introduced on April 17, 1964 and is often referred to by fans as the 1964 ½ — it came out months before the new model year vehicles usually come out. The Mustang was named by executive stylist John Najjar after one of his favorite planes – the P-51 Mustang fighter plane.

However, some believe that Robert J. Eggert, a Ford Division market research manager first came up with the name. Eggert bred quarter horses and was said to have named the vehicle after a book written by J. Frank Dobie, The Mustangs.

First Generation

The Ford Mustang is now in its sixth generation – and these are available at Richmond Ford. The first generation ran from 1964 through 1973. Ford was originally planning to use a two-seater, but sales of the two-seat 1955 Thunderbird were low, so Ford went with two buckets in the front and a bench seat in the rear, though the rear had considerably less room than the average vehicle of that time. The popular Fastback 2+2 did not go into production until August 1964, so it was not available as a ’64 ½ model. The Fastback got rid of the trunk in favor of more room for the rear seat.

Because Ford wanted to cut development costs so that it could sell the Mustang for $2,368, the vehicle borrowed from other Ford models including the chassis, drivetrain and suspension from the Falcon and the Fairlane. Ford expected original sales for the first year to be less than 100,000 units, but it beat that mark in the first three months. By the end of the model year, there were over 418,000 Mustangs sold.

Sixth Generation

The first year of the sixth generation Mustang is the 2015 model year. It was unveiled in early December 2013 in New York; Dearborn, Michigan; Los Angeles, Barcelona, Spain; Sydney, Australia and Shanghai, China. The sixth generation saw a 1.5-inch increase in body width, a trapezoidal grille, and new colors, as well as some other changes to the body.

Furthermore, the passenger volume increased to 84.5 cubic feet. The 2015 model year gives consumers the choice of a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that makes 310 horsepower, a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that makes 300 horsepower, or the 5.0-liter Coyote engine that makes 435 horsepower. The engines are mated with a choice of a Getrag six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

New vs. Used Vehicles

Before you head out to a dealership for a new vehicle, you should have two things in mind other than the type of vehicle you want: Buying new or used, and if new, leasing or purchasing. While you may start out looking at used vehicles at Richmond Ford, you may change your mind and choose a new vehicle. Likewise with leasing vs. purchasing – you might think you want to purchase, but you can always change your mind.

Benefits of Buying a New Vehicle

When you buy a new vehicle, you have the most up to date technology and you get to have that new car smell! You also have the manufacturer’s warranty should anything go bad. You can also choose from various trim levels to get what you want for features, and you can add additional options if you choose. You also get to choose which color you want – for the interior and exterior.

Cons of Buying a New Vehicle

Most of the downsides of buying new are pretty obvious, but they include the cost of the vehicle and the cost of insurance. You may be able to afford something new, though it’s not what you really want. When you add the cost of insurance on certain models, that could put the new vehicle out of reach. You have two options – you can look at the cost of leasing, which is not for everyone, or you can buy used.

Benefits of Buying a Used Vehicle

The biggest benefit of buying a used vehicle is that the cost is much lower. You may even find something newer with low miles on it so that you can have many of the newer technologies. Furthermore, when you buy used, the insurance cost is usually lower, and is definitely lower if you can pay cash for a used vehicle. You can also afford the vehicle you want if the price was out of reach on a brand new model.

Cons of Buying a Used Vehicle

The biggest downside to buying a used vehicle is that you most likely don’t have a warranty. However, when you buy a used vehicle from Richmond Ford, you can rest assured that we check out every vehicle on our used car lot. If it needs repairs before we put it on the lot, those repairs are done. You can buy an extended warranty to cover anything that might happen. Extended warranties vary in what they will cover and their length of coverage.

Stop by Richmond Ford today to test drive your next new or used vehicle. While you may have one type in mind, you might surprise yourself with the opposite!

Service Center at Richmond Ford

Tim Tonjes/Flickr Creative Commons

Servicing your vehicle is the key to making it last seemingly forever. You can get hundreds of thousands of miles out of a properly serviced and cared-for vehicle. If you are the type to drive a vehicle until it goes no more, then you should be taking advantage of the service center at Richmond Ford.

ASE Certified Techs

All of our technicians are certified and are trained specifically to work on vehicles, whether you need an oil change, suspension work, tune up, transmission work or even an engine rebuild. You can rest easy knowing that your vehicle is in good hands when you leave it for service with us.

The Importance of Service

Besides the fact that you could void your warranty by not maintaining your vehicle pursuant to the manufacturer’s recommendation, your vehicle could die a slow, painful death if you don’t keep up with the maintenance. A vehicle that is properly maintained can get a few hundred thousand miles on it. This means regular oil changes and tune ups; and repairing things as they break or before they break.

If you let an oil leak go, you could run out of oil and freeze the engine. Even if the engine does not lock up, the metal rubbing against metal puts some serious wear on the engine. Don’t forget that on a vehicle if something goes bad, it will affect something else. For example, if the brake pads are low and you don’t change them, they will damage the rotors and could damage the calipers.
