Ford Debuts Big Changes at NADA

Since Ford lost some of its market share last year, the company is working to recoup that share this year. This means Ford needed to change its strategy so its dealerships would sell more cars and trucks. This means dealers will have bigger inventories of new and updated models that are coming out. Since many of the updated products were not released until the end of 2014, they have not reached full production. The newly redesigned F-150, now available at Richmond Ford, is expected to reach full production in April according to Autonews.com.

In an interview with Autonews, Stephen Odell stated that the F-series is the “big driver of volume growth” for 2015. Some of the big changes expected from Ford include more of the F-150 models, and newly updated Edge, Focus and Escape models.

The 2015 F-150 XLT with a crew cab features a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with twin turbos. Although the engine is turbocharged, it runs on regular unleaded fuel. The engine is backed by a six-speed automatic transmission; and the truck is four-wheel drive.

The new models feature a high-strength aluminum alloy body and a steel frame to make the truck lighter and more economical. The aluminum is the same 5,000/6,000-series grade that is used in commercial transportation and aerospace. The benefits of using aluminum include reduced weight and more strength – it is less likely to dent and corrode.

The new frame is made from high-strength steel and features eight crossmembers. Although the frame is more rigid and stronger than the frame on last year’s model, it is 60 pounds lighter. The entire truck is about 700 pounds lighter, giving the F-150 more towing and hauling capacity, faster acceleration and improved power-to-weight ratio.

If you are considering a truck but didn’t have the Ford F-150 on your list, be sure you add it to your “must test drive” list – you’ll see how much extra power the truck has, how much stronger the body is, and how much more economical it is because of the aluminum body.
